A Little Riverside History
Percy H. May and his son, John D. May started Riverside Caravan Centre in around 1954. That was the year that 14 years of rationing in the UK came to an end, the first transistor radio hit the consumer market and Roger Bannister became the first man to run a mile in under four minutes (3mins 59.4 seconds); the world has changed since then and Riverside Caravan Park has changed with it.
John May retired invalided from the Navy due to Tuberculosis and was sent to Church Farm in Pagham to recuperate. Fresh air was what he needed to recover, so his father decided to buy a field in Bognor Regis and create his own caravan park.
The field was serviced only by an ash road at the time. The field has been extended over the years to approximately 40 acres and currently houses around 650 caravans.

In 1964, Percy May passed away and the site continued to be run by John May. Susan Cornelius, John’s daughter, joined the reception staff in 1979 and became a director in 1995; helping him run the company until he passed away in 2007. Susan took over as Managing Director and continues to run the holiday park.

Ken Standen started working for Riverside in 1964 as a ‘Potman’ and then became the Bar Manager. Ken is still working for Riverside as its General Manager and loving every minute of his time there.
